Basics of Number Theory

Updated: Oct 1, 2021

By Pranomita Shom We have all come across these terms natural number, rational and irrational number, integer, etc in our sums or problems. However, do we understand these terms properly? If not, then let's dig into it without further ado.

# Natural Numbers - all positive whole numbers: 1, 2, 3, etc.

# Integer - An integer is a whole number (not a fraction) that can be positive, negative, or zero. Therefore, the numbers 10, 0, -25, and 5,148 are all integers. So we can say that all natural numbers are integers

# Rational Number - a rational number is a number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, a numerator p and a non-zero denominator q. Since q may be equal to 1, every integer is a rational number.

# Irrational Number - An Irrational Number is a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction. Such as pi, e and the square root of 2

# Real number - A real number is any positive or negative number. This includes all integers and all rational and irrational numbers.

Now, let's sum it up in a diagram for better understanding.
